Dhaka--(UNB) – As hartal again came back as a regular mode of political protest, country’s businesspeople vented concern over negative impact of frequent shutdown that halts all business activities. “It hampers production and export,” said the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) after an emergency board meeting over the situation as the BNP-led opposition alliance prepared to enforce another nationwide strike today (Tuesday). President of the apex trade body Yussuf Abdullah Harun chaired the meeting held in the Federation boardroom. The meeting noted that the businessmen have to bear all institutional expenses, including staff salary, and bank interest for the working hours lost for hartal. “Hartal also causes financial loss to farmers as they face serious trouble in marketing their agricultural produce,” the business community said. The FBCCI leaders observed that the image of the country was being tarnished abroad discouraging both local and foreign investment for the shutdowns. The federative chamber urged all political parties to refrain from giving hartal in greater interest of the country’s economic development and progress; and solve the problems through discussion. |
